De Villiers had proposed to Daniella at the Taj Mahal in 2012, after 5 years of dating. He is also an accomplished guitar player and singer. In 2010, he released a bilingual pop album entitled Maak Jou Drome Waar with his friend and South African singer Ampie du Preez.
In a shock move after the Australian cricket team visited South Africa in April 2018, AB announced his retirement from all forms of international cricket.
